Soviet Jewry Movement Education Project
formerly known as Soviet Jewry Movement Archives Project

Archives

While SJMEP is not an archive, we are a virtual hub with a website designed to link to relevant material that is located in historical centers and archives around the world. SJMEP’s goal is to make the history of the movement easily accessible. As collections are identified and processed, SJMEP’s virtual hub will grow.

Archival Documentation

SJMEP is committed to sharing the history of the Soviet Jewry movement by using the rich archival resources which document the movement’s various organizations and individual initiatives of activists around the world in the creation of new educational resources.

Archive Collaboration

SJMEP is in regular communication with key archives that house collections related to the Soviet Jewry movement: learning about their content, encouraging them to digitize their collections, and, whenever possible, make their content freely accessible online.

Our current network of archival partners includes:

Curated Storytelling

SJMEP is curating the most significant sources (documents, photos, audio and video files) from the archives in order to tell the fundamental stories of the Soviet Jewry movement. These specific sources are being uploaded to the SJMEP website and will form the fundamental knowledge-base for SJMEP’s education activities.

Preserving Personal Histories

SJMEP is helping to facilitate the digitization and formal archiving of individual activists’ collections that, at present, remain in people’s ‘attics, basements and closets.’ If you or someone you know has a private personal collection in need of preservation and inclusion in the stories we tell, please visit

Global Access

SJMEP’s website will include links to all partner archives around the world that house specific collections about the Soviet Jewry movement and its individual activists.

Public Engagement

SJMEP’s communications will highlight key digitized collections to the public in order to encourage their use. As part of its growing education initiative, SJMEP aims to equip educators with tools, training, and curated resources to help integrate Soviet Jewry movement materials into classrooms and community programs.

Crediting and Ethical Use

SJMEP is committed to properly crediting and linking contributing archives, accurately representing materials within their historical context, and consulting archival partners when developing educational resources to ensure authenticity.
